Although you’re considering starting a cardamom plantation, are you really sure what it is? In Indian Hindi, cardamom goes as Elaichi. Among other things it is called the “Queen of spices” and is the sun-dried one of a perennial plant which belongs to the Zingiberaceae family.
Our Bharat is one of the largest elaichi producing countries in the world. Elaichi, which is also referred to as almond, not only grows well in the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala, but also in India. Okey, dokey? Can you snatch a scent of elaichi now? Through this, it is known as the most expensive spice world due its aroma.
You can find majorly two types of Elaichi in India,
Elaichi, like most tropical plants, want some sunshine, but not the harsh. Just like we humans can’t stay in sun all day, the Elaichi plant also cannot stay in sun all day long. So, it is recommended to look for a spot that gets light sunlight, maybe under a taller plant or a shade cloth.
For elaichi cultivation you must choose a pot that has plenty of holes at the bottom. These will allow excess water to escape and prevent rotting of the roots. The pot should be large & spacious as elaichi plants grow tall and spread its roots.
A well-draining mix, like a combination of potting soil, perlite, and some organic matter like compost or coco coir is great for elaichi plantation. This creates a fluffy, aerated haven for the roots to breathe and explore and also retain enough moisture to keep your plant happy. Plus, a slightly acidic pH of around 6.0 to 6.5 is its natural rainforest environment.
Now that your elaichi farm is ready, it’s time for the planting! We have shared both the ways, seeds and saplings:
If you want to do something out of the box then you can go for the seeds! You just have to gently press them about ½ inch deep into the moist soil and give them a space of about 4 inches apart. This space is for them to spread their roots.
You should choose seedlings if you’re just starting off. Dig a hole that is just a little bit larger than the sapling’s root ball, then carefully plant it in it. After that, replenish the hole with your potting mix, being careful to balance the stem base with respect to the nursery pot.
Your cardamom plant needs consistent hydration, but avoid overwatering it. Water deeply until the water drains from the drainage holes. Allow the top inch of soil to become completely dry before applying more water. You should water your elaichi plant if the soil seems dry to the touch. You may check the soil by inserting your finger in it.
Elaichi plants doesn’t need anything heavy to feed but when they are growing they must be fed good. Pick a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength and apply it every few weeks according to the package instructions. This can work like vitamin for your little plants.
To keep the soil cool, maintain moisture in the soil, and hat out the sprouting weed, you should cover the base of the plant with one layer of organic mulch (suggested:compost or shredded barks). Got it? Just make sure to leave some space at the bottom of the stem, it is about one or two inches from the base of the flood light.
With a little TLC, your elaichi seeds should germinate within a few weeks, and your sapling will start putting on new growth. Soon, your little plant will shine with full of life!
These steps may seem easy to you but cardamom farming in India is not an easy task. You must know how to nurture your small plant and make the most of it.
Elaichi requires warm temperatures to grow well, thus your plants should preferably be kept between 64°F and 95°F (18°C and 35°C). Don’t worry if you live in a colder region; you may create a warmer microclimate by grouping your plants together or placing them close to a humidifier.
It may be advised to spray your leaves especially during the winter season or when it is dry. Yet another possible solution is to make a pebble tray, i.e. putting a tray with stones below your plant (to have it filled). It is also important to add water to the stones just below the surface, which will evaporate and raise the humidity in the air around the plant with time.
Pruning promotes bushier growth and improved air circulation in addition to keeping your plant looking nice. Pinch off the top growth tips of your plant after it reaches a respectable height of around 12 inches. Your elaichi will grow more fully and healthily as a result of this encouraging branching out.
Although elaichi is a hardy plant, a few common pests can be problematic. Elaichi plants are harmed by mealybugs and aphids. An effective solution of insecticidal soap or a burst of water from a spray bottle can be used. Use organic neem oil for plants as a natural pest deterrent that is harmless for both the environment and your plants if the problem with pests continues.
As with any responsible parent, you must monitor your elaichi for indications of stress. Discoloration, stunted development, or wilting leaves may be signs of nutritional deficiencies, overwatering, or underwatering. In order to address the issue before it becomes worse, you may change the time that you water your plants, lightly apply fertilizer, look for pests, and more.
Now after following every step carefully, you are good to harvest your elaichi plant. Know when you can pluck elaichis from your farm.
Keep an eye on your elaichi plants! When they change from a vibrant green to a lighter yellowish-green shade, that’s the time when you can pluck. They should also feel plump and firm, not squishy or wrinkled.
Now how can you turn those fresh cardamoms into the flavorful spice you love. There are two main drying methods:
Keep in the Sun: Find a warm, well-ventilated spot with plenty of indirect sunlight. Spread your pods out on a clean screen or mesh tray and let the sun do its magic! Turning them occasionally ensures even drying.
Keep in the Oven: If there isn’t much sunlight, don’t worry. You may dry your cardamoms on a baking sheet for a few hours by preheating your oven to its lowest temperature (about 150°F or 65°C); don’t forget to flip them often.

When your cardamom pods are absolutely dry and crumbly, put them away for use in other recipes. Store them in a cold, dark cupboard in an airtight container. Your dried cardamom pods can last up to a year in good condition with the right storage.

Below are some of the common problems your might face with cardamom cultivation in India:
Keep an eye on your plant. Wilting leaves, discoloration, or stunted growth could be a clue.
Is the soil bone dry? Underwatered elaichi gets grumpy. Give it a good soak and adjust your watering schedule for more consistent moisture.
Chances of having soggy soil are alarming! Watering over the required amount can cause root rot. Go ahead and check drainage – if needed, re-pot your plant into a different pot with appropriate drainage holes.
Are you starting to see little bugs sucking out on your leaves? Aphids or mealybugs could be what did it. Apply jet spray or neem oil to do away with them or else.
Is your plant looking a little pale and leggy? Not enough light might be the reason. Try moving it to a brighter spot with dappled sunlight.
